Are you getting enough Fiber?
Are you getting enough fiber??
Fiber is a type of non digestible carbohydrate found in legumes, whole grains, vegetables, fruits & nuts/seeds. There are two types of fiber, and we need both of them in our diet. Soluble fibers are viscous and fermentable, and can lower our blood cholesterol. Insoluble fibers help to bulk up stool volume and improve motility.
The general recommendation is to eat around 20-45 grams per day, depending on a few factors. For a more specific recommendation, women should aim for at least 30 to 35 grams of fiber per day and men should aim for at least 40 to 45 grams of fiber per day. You may need to experiment a bit to determine what types of fiber and how much works for you as some folks are more sensitive to some types of fiber (beans for example!).
FYI, refined sugars, oils, dairy products and alcohol contain no fiber. Additionally, a low-fiber diet is associated with many health problems, including cardiovascular disease, GI disorders, cancers, poor bowel function, diabetes, excess body fat & high blood pressure.
